Jupiter space probes. The galileo probe was an atmospheric entry probe carried by the main galileo spacecraft to jupiter where it directly entered a hot spot and returned data from the planet. The juno probe launched aug. Edt monday july 4. It began with the arrival of pioneer 10 into the jovian system in 1973 and as of 2016 has continued with eight further spacecraft missions. Juno will improve our understanding of the solar systems beginnings by revealing the origin and evolution of jupiter.
The probe will come closer to the top of jupiters colorful clouds than any probe before it and after about 20 months of observation juno will end its mission by crashing into the gas giant. 23 25 the voyage to jupiter took five years and included two orbital maneuvers in august and september 2012 and a flyby of the earth on october 9 2013. Confirmation that the burn had completed was received on earth at 853 pm. The 339 kilogram 747 lb probe was built by hughes aircraft company at its el segundo california plant and measured about 13 meters 43 ft across.
